5 Things That Home Insurance Does Not Cover That You Should Know

Home insurance will cover a lot of things, even things you may not know such as meteor strikes. However, there may be some things that you assume are covered by home insurance that may not be covered by home insurance at all. Here are 5 things that you should know are not covered by home insurance.

  1. Earthquakes: Damage that an earthquake causes to your home will most likely not be covered under home insurance. Damage that is caused by the damage of an earthquake, such as a fire, may be covered by insurance.
  2. Flooding: Despite flooding seeming like an obvious thing for home insurance to cover, most policies do not cover flooding. Flooding insurance exists, and you will have to pay for that separate from home insurance.
  3. Trampolines and Pools: Obviously these two things are dangerous, so it may make sense that they are not covered. Make sure your home insurance company is aware that you have them, or have gotten them, in order to stay on your current policy.
  4. Poor Maintenance: If poor care of a home leads to mold, termites, or any other damage then home insurance probably will not cover it. Things that are the fault of a homeowner will not be covered, whereas damage caused unpredictably to the home will be covered.
  5. Extreme Valuables: While most insurance policies will have a generous cap on how much money they will cover for the things inside of your home, sometimes these things can get capped early. Losing a million-dollar necklace to a fire will not lead to a million-dollar pay-out from a standard home insurance policy. Make sure your policy covers all your assets.

There are many things that home insurance will cover, but there are many things that you need to be wary of and get increased coverage for or another policy for. Call your local home insurance agent to see what can be covered, and what coverage you need.
