Ask the Plumber – How Do I Avoid Frozen Pipes this Winter?

One of the things that a lot of plumbers deal with during the winter is frozen pipes. So we have come up with a list of things that you can do to help with avoiding calling your plumber out due to frozen pipes this winter.

  • Drain the water from any pipes that could freeze. This means that you should also include the lines to your sprinklers and swimming pool.
  • Keep your garage door closed, particularly if there are water lines in your garage.
  • Open the bathroom and kitchen cabinet doors. This will allow the warmer air to get around your plumbing, particularly for the sinks on exterior walls. If there are small children in the house, make sure that you are removing harmful household chemicals and cleaners.
  • Allow cold water to keep dripping from any faucets that are connected to your exposed pipes. This is going to help with preventing your pipes from becoming frozen.
  • Keep your thermostat constant around the clock.
  • If you’re going to be away when the weather is cold, keep the heat running. The temperature shouldn’t be under 55° F. Yes, this could be costly especially if you’re away for a while. But having a plumber come out also can be costly.

These are six things that you can do to avoid calling a plumber out during the winter because of frozen pipes. They can help you with avoiding a lot of problems and they can also help avoid your pipes bursting.
