Chiropractor Gives His Take on Sleeping Positions and Pillows

Humans sleep in different positions, none of which is technically correct. However, pillows are extremely important, and their main function is support. Using the proper pillow in the proper place while sleeping can lead to peaceful, healthy slumber without residual back and neck pain on waking.

Here’s what a chiropractor suggests:

  • Back Sleepers: This is the most common snoring position. For best support, place a medium-firm pillow under your head, and a firm one under your knees. The latter will take pressure off the lower back, enabling the spine to rest in its natural curves. Make sure the pillow under your head doesn’t prop you up; it should provide just enough support for the natural curve of your neck.
  • Stomach Sleepers: While this position is generally frowned upon, it’s actually a natural position. The chiropractor says that proper pillow placement is important because it reduces the chances of waking up with neck and back pain. To reduce stress on your neck and lower back, place a firm pillow under your stomach/hips. Doing this may even eliminate the need for a head pillow.
  • Side Sleepers: This is probably the most common position and also the best for the spine. To alleviate pressure on your lower back and hips, place a pillow between your knees. The chiropractor says you should have another firm pillow under your head to keep your neck in line comfortably with the rest of your body.
