Keeping a Real Christmas Tree Fresh is Easy!

Keeping a Real Christmas Tree Fresh is Easy!

If you have consistently used an artificial Christmas tree despite wishing you could enjoy the scent and realism of a fresh tree, the reason is likely based on concerns about keeping a real Christmas tree fresh as long as possible. It might surprise you to learn that with a few tips, you can easily avoid a house full of fallen pine needles. Here are some ways you can enjoy your Christmas tree throughout the holiday season.

  • Buy local – Whenever possible, purchase your Christmas tree from a local tree farm instead of a big box retailer or a tree stand that ships them in from elsewhere in the country. In fact, a farm where the tree is cut down once you choose it is even better. If you do not have a tree farm near you, don’t hesitate to ask them where they came from and how long ago the trees were harvested. You should also check to be sure it isn’t already dropping needles.
  • Trim the trunk – When a tree is cut, the end dries up and impedes it from pulling up water. If you trim off an inch or so before putting it into your tree stand, it will be able to get the drink of water it needs to stay alive. In addition, a straight cut is preferable to a diagonal or uneven cut.
  • Keep water filled – Do not let the tree run out of water. To make this easier, be sure to choose a tree stand that holds plenty of water. On average, you’ll want to supply your tree with at least a quart of water for each inch of the trunk diameter. Check it every day and add water as needed.
  • Keep the tree away from heat – Placement of your Christmas tree is important for keeping a real Christmas tree fresh. Avoid placing next to a heat vent, fireplace, or any other heat source. The cooler the location, the longer the tree will remain fresh.
  • The question about additives – There are mixed feelings about water additives being of any help. Feel free to give them a try, but don’t expect them to be a substitute for adequate watering.

Keeping a real Christmas tree fresh isn’t that difficult if you follow this advice. You should be able to put it up and expect four to six weeks of enjoyment if you choose. Keep an eye on it and when it starts dropping needles, get it taken down and removed from your home.
